Did you know that traditionally wedding cakes were actually made of bread. This was a symbol for the “breaking of bread” to signify a union created between the husband and his wife and the two families.Historically, it was common for the bread to be broken over the brides head as a symbol of breaking away from her past and her new union as a wife. Also this practice subsequently evolved into the breaking of bread and showering pieces over the couples head to signify good fortune and luck in the marriage. This practice is not universal and many different countries practice variations of the same basic theme, an example being the sprinkling of confetti or rice over the couple as they leave the church.

The American Variation on the Wedding Cake Traditions

In America, cutting the cake is the first task that the married couple performs together. This is carried out in front of their guests and family. Traditionally, the bride and groom then give each other a taste of the wedding cake, cutting two slices from a single shared piece of cake. Superstition has it that by eating a piece of your own wedding cake it is a guarantee for a happy wedding and life together and this is further enhanced if the bride and groom eat the first slice of the cake together. Many traditionalists believe that by cutting and sharing of the first slice of wedding cake the bride and groom signify that they are committing to share their lives according to their wedding vows.
