Did you know that traditionally wedding cakes were actually made of bread. This was a symbol for the “breaking of bread” to signify a union created between the husband and his wife and the two families.Historically, it was common for the bread to be broken over the brides head as a symbol of breaking away from her past and her new union as a wife. Also this practice subsequently evolved into the breaking of bread and showering pieces over the couples head to signify good fortune and luck in the marriage. This practice is not universal and many different countries practice variations of the same basic theme, an example being the sprinkling of confetti or rice over the couple as they leave the church.
